Two businesses at one address
A fuel station with a store is really two businesses. The forecourt sells fuel, which is bought on the fuel supplier's terms. The store sells snacks, drinks, tobacco, lottery and prepared food, carries stock across many items and runs refrigeration around the clock.
Card processing fees apply to card sales. The equipment list is long: dispensers, tanks, canopy lighting, walk-in coolers, fryers and point-of-sale systems that integrate with the pumps.
Lancaster County, PA stations and stores in the Census counts
Lancaster County had 146 gasoline stations with employees in 2023, employing 2,061 people with about $59.5 million in annual payroll (County Business Patterns 2023). Fewer than a quarter, 23.3%, employed under five people. Stand-alone convenience stores without fuel numbered 27, with 128 employees, and two-thirds of those were very small. ZIP 17602 had 13 gas stations and 4 convenience stores (ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023).
Grocery stores, a related food-retail group, counted 143 employers with 7,900 employees. Fuel stations without payroll numbered 7 in 2024 under the newer industry code (Nonemployer Statistics 2024).
Funding the shelves inside the store
Store inventory spans many suppliers and delivery schedules. Inventory financing or a line of credit covers a store reset, a new prepared-food program or a larger order to secure a supplier rebate. Fuel purchases may be handled under the fuel supplier's own terms rather than through general business funding.
Gas station equipment financing
Dispensers, payment terminals, canopy and LED lighting, coolers, ice machines, roller grills and car-wash equipment are financeable with the equipment as collateral. Underground tanks and their monitoring systems are a specialized case: partners will ask about their age and compliance status, and some will not finance them at all. See equipment financing for loans and leases.
Buying an operating fuel station
Buying an existing station can be a term loan conversation, sometimes alongside the seller's own terms or a specialized lender. Partners will want the seller's fuel volumes, store sales and margins for several years, the supply agreement, the condition of the tanks and any environmental reports, and the lease or the property terms. The property purchase itself is outside what Crownwick arranges; the business, equipment and working capital are the parts we discuss.
Station needs and the funding usually discussed
| Need | Usually discussed |
|---|---|
| Store stock, reset or new food program | Inventory financing |
| Dispensers, coolers, POS, lighting | Equipment financing |
| Store refit or buying an operating station | Term loan |
| Short gaps between deliveries and deposits | Line of credit |
A hypothetical cooler and POS upgrade
Illustration only, not an offer: a station replaces its reach-in coolers for $21,500 and upgrades a POS that integrates with the pumps for $9,800. Financing both as equipment spreads $31,300 over their working life; the store can check the monthly payment against the extra cold-drink margin it expects, using its own sales history.
